Simply put, self-storage units are compartments where you can store the stuff that won’t fit in your house, apartment or place of business.

What is Self Storage?

Self-storage has the advantage of being affordable and convenient, giving residential and commercial guests additional options for storing their possessions rather than relocating, selling or discarding their excess.

Most traditional self-storage facilities are single-story buildings where guests can drive right up to the door of their units. Newer facilities are often constructed in multi-story buildings, where access is gained through a common loading area. Some facilities offer a mix of both types of storage.

Whether the storage unit is an outside drive-up unit or inside a building, entry is typically restricted to tenants only by having a personalized PIN. Tenants most often access their individual units via a roll-up metal door. The guest also provides his or her own lock and the facility’s workers do not have access to the unit.

Self Storage FAQs

Yes, it's against state and federal laws to live in a storage unit, not to mention dangerous!

You can be in your storage unit for a short period of time, such as performing inventory for a business, unloading belongings, or even searching for a specific item, but time in your storage unit should be limited. Please check your Rental Agreement for additional details.

Yes, storing clothes is a common use for a storage unit. For short-term storage, cardboard boxes should suffice, but for long-term storage, consider a sturdy, airtight plastic bin.

For the most part, no. You may occasionally find one, but they are not the standard.

For your convenience, bills are due on the first of each month. Take advantage of our free AutoPay automatic billing service and never miss a payment!

Many storage facilities offer gated outdoor parking options specifically for cars and other vehicles. Sometimes, large indoor spots can be used for car storage, but check with your local store manager and consult your Rental Agreement for details.

What Can Self Storage Be Used For?

Self-storage can be used by almost anyone to store almost everything. Here are some of the many reasons that our guests choose Store Space.

Personal Storage

Many guests choose to store a wide range of personal belongings, from seasonal clothes and decorations, to extra furniture, baby clothes and many more items that hold memories and value. Just as there are many things to store, there are also many reasons to rent a storage unit.

Moving

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, coordinating move-ins and move-outs can be challenging. Avoid the stress simply by moving items to a storage unit instead of racking up costly storage fees from a moving company. Then, when the commotion settles down, unload your storage unit—on your schedule.

Decluttering

Just because you’re decluttering doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything. It’s OK to hang onto things that hold memories, or personal value, even if you don’t want them cluttering up your home all the time. This is especially true of seasonal décor and similar items that might not “spark joy” all year round but take on special meaning near the holidays.

Downsizing

When it’s time to move into a smaller place, don’t fret about deciding which items can stay and which items need to be recycled or thrown away. Get a storage unit for all the things you’re undecided about, so you needn’t worry about trying to replace something later. This is especially helpful if you have adult-age children who might not be in a place to take back all their stuff.

Life events

Self-storage makes a great temporary solution to help families deal with everything from a new addition to the family to divorce, even the passing of a loved one. If it’s something that holds value, but doesn’t have a place right now, store it until you’ve got a place for it or until you can make other arrangements.

Business Storage

Successful businesses of all types have discovered that renting storage is a cost-effective alternative to relocating for the purpose of gaining additional square footage. This holds true for professional offices, retailers, contractors, manufacturing businesses and all types of commercial ventures, to name a few.

Inventory

A storage unit is a great place for seasonal inventory that would otherwise fill up the backroom of a brick-and-mortar shop.

Document storage

Since many professional offices are required to keep paperwork for a fixed period of time, a storage unit can serve as an effective repository for files that would otherwise crowd office space.

Warehousing needs

Storage units can serve as ad hoc warehouses for manufacturing businesses as they ramp up production.

Equipment storage

Businesses focused on seasonal items, like holiday lights for example, can benefit greatly from storage. Contractors, such as landscapers and arborists, might store equipment they need only a few times a year.

Other usage

Real estate agents and stagers store furniture in between showings. Crafters store their product rather than keeping it on the kitchen table. Collectors and resellers store larger collections until they can comb through it. Sales reps keep sample product and sales materials close at hand.

Vehicle Storage (select locations)

Cars, RVs, Trucks, Boats

Many storage facilities offer onsite vehicle storage options. These are often outdoors, behind the main gate. This type of vehicle storage is often a great alternative to storing an extra car, RV, or boat in your driveway or on the street, especially in locations with nosy HOAs and strict city ordinances. Check online inventory or with the store manager to see if your local Store Space offers vehicle storage options.

What Should You NOT Put in a Storage Unit?

Of course, not everything can be placed in a storage unit. The main ones are easy to remember since they all start with the letter “f”:

  • Food
  • Fuel
  • Furs
  • Firearms

State and local laws may prohibit the storage of other items as well, so if you’re unsure, it’s best to check with your local store manager.

How Big of a Storage Unit Do I Need?

How big of a storage unit you’ll need to rent largely depends on how much you plan to store. Storage units are typically grouped into small, medium and large, with many different sizes and shapes from 25 square feet top 300 square feet or larger!

As a rule of thumb, a small unit (5x10 in most cases) can often take a small piece of furniture or two, plus boxes and bins. One to two rooms of furniture and belongings can generally fit within 100 sq. ft, which equates to a 10x10 storage unit. A 10x20 storage unit can be used for a three-bedroom house!

Keep in mind that many storage units are quite tall on the inside, so effective stacking is key to getting the most into your unit.

Storage units come in many shapes and sizes, and our storage professionals are skilled at helping you pick the right-sized storage unit. Just call your local store or contact our Care Center at 833-786-7366.

How Much is a Storage Unit?

Storage units are a cost-effective alternative to relocation for many residential and commercial guests. There are a number of factors that can contribute to the price of a storage unit, including the size of the unit, its location, plus available amenities and features. At Store Space, we shop the competition to ensure that our rates are competitive in the marketplace and we always offer valuable move-in promotions to lower your out-of-pocket expenses.

She-Shed Vs. Man Cave: What's the difference?

large man cave with pool table in the center

You've probably heard the phrases "she-shed" and "man cave" many times, but do you know what the differences are between these two havens from the stresses of daily life?

In this article, we'll explain some of the differences between the two, and give you some tips on creating and decorating either—or both—of these unique spaces.

What is the Difference Between a She-shed and a Man Cave?

The main difference between a man cave and a she-shed is the purpose of the space. A man cave is typically used as a retreat for men to relax, watch sports, play video games, or just hang out with friends. It's usually filled with items that reflect the interests of the man who uses it. On the other hand, a she-shed is designed to be a place for women to escape from their daily lives and enjoy some peace and quiet. It can also be used as an office or craft room, where women can work on projects in privacy. While both spaces are meant to provide relaxation and comfort, they are tailored to meet different needs and preferences.

What do Most Men put in their Man Caves?

Most men typically fill their man caves with items and activities they enjoy. This can include things like a big-screen television, gaming consoles, sports memorabilia, comfortable furniture and a bar or mini-fridge. Some men may also choose to add a pool table or dart board for entertainment.

What are some of men's most popular interests?

Some of the most popular interests for men include sports, gaming, movies, music, and technology. Other items that may be found in a man cave include sports memorabilia, comfortable furniture, a bar or mini-fridge, pool table or dart board. Men may also choose to add items such as posters or artwork that reflect their passions.

What part of the house makes for a good man cave?

A man cave can be located in any part of the house. Common locations for a man cave include a basement, garage, attic, or spare bedroom. It's important to choose a space that is comfortable and private so that you can relax in your man cave without interruption. Additionally, it should have enough room to comfortably fit the items you plan on putting in it.

How much money should I expect to spend on building a man cave?

The cost of building a man cave will depend on the size and scope of the project. Generally speaking, you can expect to spend anywhere from a few hundred dollars for basic items such as furniture and decorations, to several thousand dollars for more elaborate projects like adding in a bar or gaming area. It's important to plan out your budget before beginning any project so that you know how much money you have available to spend.

What do Women put into their She-Sheds?

Women typically fill their she-sheds with items that reflect their favorite activities and hobbies. This can include things like comfortable furniture, a desk or workspace, bookshelves, craft supplies, and decorations that reflect the woman's personal style. Some women may also choose to add in a mini-fridge or coffee maker for convenience.

What are some of the most popular hobbies for women?

Some of the most popular hobbies for women include crafting, reading, gardening, cooking, baking, yoga, painting/drawing, photography, and writing. With the possible exception of cooking and baking, the majority of these activities can be done in a she-shed.

Where do women typically build their she-sheds?

Women typically build their she-sheds in a backyard, garden or other outdoor space. Sometimes, this is a converted shed, pool house, or even a tiny house. This allows them to enjoy the outdoors while still having a private and comfortable place to relax. Additionally, some women may choose to build their she-shed in an unused corner of the house such as a basement, attic or spare bedroom.

How much money should I expect to spend on building a she-shed?

The cost of building a she-shed will depend on the size and complexity of the project. Generally, you can expect to spend anywhere from a few hundred dollars for basic materials to several thousand dollars for more complex projects. It's important to factor in the cost of materials, labor, and any additional features you may want to include in your she-shed.

When should you Hire a General Contractor?

It is recommended to hire a general contractor when building out your she-shed or man cave if you are not comfortable with the construction process. A general contractor can help ensure that the project is completed safely and correctly, as well as provide advice on materials and design. Additionally, they can help with any necessary permits or inspections that may be required for the project.

Where can you find Inspiration for your Man Cave or She-Shed?

Find inspiration for your man cave or she-shed by looking at home improvement magazines, websites and blogs. Additionally, you can look at photos of other people's man caves and she-sheds on social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram. You can also visit local home improvement stores to get ideas from the displays and products available.

Does having a Man Cave or She-Shed Increase the Value of your Home?

Having a man cave or she-shed can potentially increase the value of your home, depending on the quality of the construction and materials used. Additionally, if the man cave or she-shed is designed to fit in with the overall aesthetic of your home, it can make your home more attractive to potential buyers. Ultimately, having a well-designed and constructed man cave or she-shed can be an asset when it comes time to sell your home.

What about Living in an Apartment?

If you live in an apartment, you can still create a man cave or she-shed by decorating a room with items that reflect your interests and hobbies. For example, you could hang posters of your favorite sports teams, display memorabilia from your favorite movies or TV shows, or add furniture and decorations that reflect your style. Additionally, you could add items such as bookshelves for storing books and magazines, game consoles for playing video games, or even a mini-bar for entertaining guests.

Do people take issue with the names "she-shed" and "man cave"?

Yes, some people do take issue with the names "she-shed" and "man cave." They argue that these terms are sexist and imply that women should have a separate space for relaxation while men can use any space in the home. To avoid this problem, some people prefer to use gender-neutral terms such as "we-shed" or "chill pad."

Is there a Hybrid of a Man Cave and She-Shed?

Yes, a hybrid of the two is called the "we-shed." This type of space can be designed to provide a comfortable place for both men and women to relax. The design should incorporate elements from both the man cave and she-shed, such as comfortable seating, storage solutions, and entertainment options. Additionally, it should also include items that reflect the interests of both of you, such as sports memorabilia, bookshelves or a craft table.

Whether you should put a wet bar or dry bar in your we-shed depends on how you plan to use the space. If you plan to entertain guests, then a wet bar with a sink and refrigerator would be ideal. However, if you just want to have a place to relax and unwind, then a dry bar with shelves for storing drinks and snacks may be more suitable. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide which type of bar would best suit your needs.

Conclusion: Do I need to Rent Self-Storage?

It's a good idea to rent self-storage if you are building a man cave or she-shed. Depending on the size of your project and the materials you are using, it may be beneficial to rent a unit for storing tools and supplies during the construction process. Additionally, if you plan on keeping any furniture or decorations in the man cave or she-shed after it is completed, renting a storage unit can provide additional space for these items. Construction of the shed/cave may have displaced items from another room or space in your household, so you may need to find a suitable storage unit while you decide what to do with them.

FAQs:

What is the benefit of a man cave?

The benefit of a man cave is that it provides a space for men to relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It can also be used as a place to entertain friends, watch sports, or play video games.

What is a she-shed and its benefits?

This little getaway is located (usually) in the backyard as a spruced up shed or tiny house—that also servs as a chill pad. Because she-sheds are a place for women to relax or invest time in a hobby or passion, they may increase self-esteem, alleviate anxiety and stress, and provide a new perspective.

What is a 'We-Shed'?

Now there's a way to combine both man caves and she-sheds into one structure: the “we-shed.” The we-shed consists of two individual shed joined together by a deck. Or, it’s simply a comfortable place to relax and pursue personal interests either separately or together.
